Highland Crossing Estimator

The interior highlands (Sprengisandur, Kjölur, Veiðivötn) are where Iceland gets serious. Plan it properly.

Plan your crossing

Why most travellers should skip this

The highland F-roads are how you get to Landmannalaugar, Askja, Þórsmörk, and Kerlingarfjöll. They're also where Iceland's serious driving risks live: glacial river crossings, loose gravel, and zero phone signal for hours. Average travellers don't need to cross — you can see plenty of Iceland without it. If you do cross, plan two days minimum.

FAQ

What if my car gets stuck in a river?

Don't enter the water in the first place if you're uncertain. If stuck, get out the upstream side. Iceland's emergency number 112 dispatches volunteer rescue that can take 6+ hours in remote areas. Carry a tow hook and check your rental contract for water-damage coverage — many exclude it.

Is a Super Jeep / guided tour better?

Yes, for first-timers. Guides know which rivers rose overnight, carry recovery gear, and have radio comms with the road service. Costs ISK 35,000–80,000 per person — comparable to renting a proper 4WD yourself plus the risk.
