Match the hike to you
What nobody tells you about glacier hiking
Crampons are sharp, the ice is uneven, and you'll feel every step in your ankles. Even "easy" glacier hikes involve climbing ice ridges, balancing on narrow paths, and walking back downhill with your knees absorbing the impact. The fitness level of average tourists is fine for Sólheimajökull; for Vatnajökull's longer routes you want real hiking experience.
Independent glacier walking without a guide is illegal — crevasses are hidden under fresh snow. The guide isn't just a formality; they're checking ice conditions in real time.
FAQ
What should I wear?
Waterproof shell, hiking boots (hired if needed), and warm layers. Avoid cotton — ice meltwater will soak through instantly. Operators provide helmets and harnesses; some also rent boots.
Which operator?
For Sólheimajökull: Icelandic Mountain Guides. For Vatnajökull: Glacier Adventures or IceGuide. Snæfellsjökull guides operate from Arnarstapi — the climb itself is steeper and more exposed.
Best month?
June through September. Winter tours (October–April) exist but require more experience and cost more; weather windows are narrow.
