Pick your colony
Colony timeline matters
The biggest mistake is showing up in late June expecting peak activity. The peak is mid-July through early August when chicks (called "pufflings") are visible at burrow entrances. Late August is departure week — adults leave first, juveniles last.
Different colonies peak at different times. Látrabjarg in the Westfjords is early (May–June), because the cliffs are warmer. The small Reykjavík-area colonies are later (mid-July), because the season starts later at that latitude.
FAQ
Are puffins really that easy to see?
Yes — Iceland hosts 60% of the world's Atlantic puffin population. But they nest on cliff tops, so the angle matters. Some colonies let you stand a few metres from burrows; others require a boat or a long walk.
Best for photography?
Látrabjarg (Westfjords) has the largest accessible colonies. For close-up shots of birds with fish in their beaks, plan for early morning in late July.
Are boat tours better?
For seabird photography yes — puffins feed at sea and you can get eye-to-eye with them. From Reykjavík harbour, several operators run 1-hour puffin tours to the small islands in Faxaflói bay.
