Accommodation Cost Strategy

Accommodation is the single biggest line item. The type you pick changes everything.

The strategy behind the choice

Hotel prices in Iceland peak in summer (June–August) at ISK 35,000–60,000 for two. In shoulder season they drop 30–50%. Farm stays (EDDS, Fljótstunga, Skálakot) cost less and give you a genuine cultural experience, plus most include breakfast. Guesthouses with shared bath are the sweet spot for couples: ISK 18,000–25,000 including breakfast.

Camping at organised grounds (not wild camping) costs ISK 1,500–2,500 per person. That's one-tenth of a hotel. If you're willing to share facilities, have your own tent, and don't mind weather exposure, this is the value play. Reykjavík area has city campsites (Laugardalur) — convenient for late arrivals.

FAQ

Book early?

Yes — 6+ months ahead for July–August in popular spots. Shoulder season is fine 1–2 months ahead. Last-minute summer bookings are expensive or impossible.

Is Airbnb cheaper?

Airbnb pricing has converged with hotels in Iceland. Service fees + cleaning fees + Iceland's VAT can make them as expensive as a guesthouse, with less authenticity. The genuinely cheap option is camping.

Is wild camping legal?

Yes, with restrictions. You're allowed to pitch a tent on uncultivated land for one night if no organised campsite is available — but not near farms or in national parks without permission. Leave no trace.
